Do you assign a numeric grade to books?

No. Unlike coins or cards, books are evaluated descriptively against bibliographic references and condition standards (Fine, Near Fine, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor). Our certificates provide detailed notes on the binding, text block, plates, and dust jacket, avoiding the reductionist nature of a single numeric score.

How is the first edition / first state determined?

By collation against the standard bibliography for the work or author (e.g., Hayward, Wing, Goff, Pforzheimer). We examine 'points of issue' — specific typographical errors, paper types, or binding variants that distinguish the earliest state of a printing from later ones.

Do you require the dust jacket?

We certify books with or without dust jackets. For modern firsts (post-1900), the presence and state of the dust jacket is recorded prominently, as it often determines 80-90% of the market value. We also verify the jacket's authenticity and check for restoration.

Will you certify books that have been rebound?

Yes. Rebound books are described accurately, including the style, date estimate, and quality of the replacement binding. Original boards present but detached are noted, as is any evidence of 'sophistication' (combining parts from different copies).

Can you arrange conservation before certification?

We refer to our retained conservators for paper, vellum, and leather restoration. We certify the book only after their work is complete, with a full record of the conservation appended to the registry entry and the certificate.

What about Bibles, Books of Hours, and manuscripts?

These are handled by our Manuscripts & Early Printed Books specialist. We provide paleographic dating, provenance research, and condition reports. These items usually require the Specialist or Private Office tier due to the research intensive nature of the work.

How do you detect facsimile or marriage pages?

We use high-power microscopy to examine paper grain, chain lines, and ink absorption. We compare page dimensions and foxing patterns across the text block; any page that does not 'belong' to the original gathering is identified and noted.

Is the clamshell included in the price?

Bespoke museum-grade clamshells are a separate service, as each is hand-made to the exact dimensions of your volume. Pricing depends on materials (linen, buckram, or goatskin) and the level of leather tooling or titling required.

What provenance documentation is recorded?

We record bookplates, inscriptions, library marks, and prior auction records. A verified provenance (e.g., from the library of a known collector or historical figure) is a permanent part of the Xene registry entry.

Do you certify maps and atlases?

Yes. Atlases are collated plate-by-plate against references like Koeman or Shirley. Individual maps are examined for plate state, hand-colouring authenticity, and margins. All maps receive the same archival housing options as books.

What is a 'sophisticated' copy?

In bibliography, 'sophisticated' refers to a copy that has been improved by adding missing leaves or plates from another copy, or by repairing damage in a way that attempts to deceive. Xene's primary role is to identify and disclose such alterations.

Can I submit a collection for on-site evaluation?

Yes, through our Private Office. For significant libraries or estates, our specialists can conduct initial collation and condition assessment on-site before transport to the London or Zurich atelier for full certification.
